Q: Would you redo that estimate based on laudas? Maybe. I am familiar with the Portuguese imperial law that defined laudas for public translators, and which persists in Brazil to this day, as amended, with rates fixed by the various state boards of trade. I have written a spreadsheet to make the conversion, and can instantly convert dollars per 1000 words into reais por lauda at the current dollar exchange rate. The result, however, is still divorced from reality because:
1. I bid on real documents after I examine a sample and know the payment and due dates.
2. I bid on each assignment separately, and my calculations are no more based on imperial laudas than they are on patacas and milreis--though these could theoretically be converted into current legal tender.
3. Although a legal permanent resident, I am not yet a Brazilian citizen and therefore not permitted to even sit for the public translator and business interpreter examination. Laudas are prescribed for them, not for professional translators working internationally in a competitive market. Please understand that I am not a Brazilian public translator. If the job requires a Tradutor Público e Intérprete Comercial diploma, then I am not qualified.
4. Comparing sight-unseen costs for laudas does not compare product specifications, that is, whether you will get grammatically correct translations in idiomatic business English produced by someone who understands basic physics and calculus, mining regulations, blasting jargon, milling equipment and processes and the contractual and accounting procedures which underlie Brazilian methods of entering into supplier agreements.
In response to item 4 you might want to check my references or examine samples of my mining work. If I am given the impression that technical competence in rendering accurate and idiomatic English is a secondary consideration, and that decisions are going to be made based on bureaucratic standards with long delays for payment rather than principles of engineering and fast performance by all parties, my bid structure will be considerably different.
Therefore, I would like to see anything you expect your vendors to sign, as well as what terms and timeframes you propose for making payments to vendors for translations.  I would like to see these in writing before we go any further.
