composer José Maurício Nunes Garcia. March 10 the LBJ School of Public
Affairs hosted the Labor in the Americas conference with Minas Gerais Labor
Court Judge Antônio Álvares da Silva, Antônio Augusto Anastasia and Nicholas
Shumway, with former Labor Secretary Ray Marshall adding his observations
to panel discussion. |

The University of Texas invited Luiz Henrique Proença Soares to take part in an Institute of Latin American Studies symposium on Regional Economic Integration held at the Thompson Conference Center March 8, 2004. When not working
with Brazil's Ministry of Planning, Budget and Management, Mr Soares is
an active researcher at the São Paulo State Data Analysis Foundation SEADE/SP.
Ben Maya was in charge of the interpreters.

At the FTAA talks in Quito, Ecuador, the US Chamber of Commerce and the
Brazil-US Business Council organized a forum for dialogue on recommendations to the Free Trade Area negotiators Oct 29, 2002. This panel of tariff
experts worked out a consensus document while I interpreted the give-and-take.
Participants represented a broad cross-section of US and Brazilian business and industry.

Religious freedom was the contention, seizure of Brazilian hoasca tea used
as a sacrament by the UDV (União do Vegetal) in New Mexico was at issue
as government and private attorneys argued before US District Court Judge
James Parker. Attorneys for Plaintiff and Defendants hired me as court
interpreter for witnesses from Brazil in late October 2001. The decision summarizes the nature of the case. (400k pdf)

The University of Texas hosted the African Diaspora conference during Black History Month in Feb 1996. A team of linguists interpreted
the proceedings and presentations--including multimedia--into three languages
in real time. This was one of the most entertaining events ever, and covered
history, law, language and culture over centuries.
A Universidade do of Texas realizou a Conferência da Diáspora Africana comemorando o Mês da História Africana em fevereiro de 1996. Havia uma
equipe de intérpretes traduzindo simultaneamente a interação e as apresentações--inclusive
de multimídia--para três idiomas. O evento foi um dos mais divertidos que

development were the topic of a conference of legal scholars at the LBJ
